چکیده

Routing in the Internet is based on the best-effort mechanism, wherein the routers generally forward packets to minimize the number of hops to the destination. Furthermore, all packets of a type are treated the same independent of their size. We propose the framework of NetLets to enable the applications to send data packets to the destination with certain guarantees on the end-to-end delay. NetLets employ in situ instruments to measure the effective bandwidth and propagation delays on the links, and compute the paths with minimum measured endto-end delay for data packets of various sizes. Based on experiments over local area networks, the paths selected by NetLets indeed achieve the minimum end-to-end delay, and our method outperformed the best-effort mechanism based on the hop count. We also describe an implementation of NetLets over the Internet to illustrate their viability for wide-area networks. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Netlets for End-To-End Delay Minimization in Distributed Computing Over the Internet Using Two-Paths

In a number of distributed computing applications, messages must be transmitted on demand between processes running at different locations on the Internet. The end-to-end delays experienced by the messages have a significant “random” component due to the complicated nature of network traffic. We propose a method based on delay-regression estimation to achieve low end-to-end delays for message t...

NetLets: End-To-End QoS Mechanisms for Distributed Computing Over Internet Using Two-Paths

We propose a two-path method based on delay-regression estimation to achieve low end-to-end delays for message transmissions in distributed computing applications. Our scheme is implemented over the Internet by a network of NetLets, which communicate with one another to maintain an accurate \state" of delay-regressions in the network. NetLets handle all network tasks at host processes and also ...

On Measurement-Based Transport Method for Message Delay Minimization Over Wide-Area Networks

Data transport methods with end-to-end performance guarantees are required by the next generation distributed computing applications. Transport methods based on default best-effort IP networks are not capable of providing such guarantees due to complex traffic distributions in wide-area networks and highly dynamic network conditions. In this paper, we present a measurement-based transport metho...

The Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks

Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...

The rapid change of network topology is a major challenge in routing. One of the we...
